We try out the Nike Free Run+

In creating the ‘Free’ range back in 2005 Nike went back to basics. They did the motoring equivalent of taking a road-going, mass-produced car and transforming it into a stripped out, lightweight and lean racing version. But what if you could have both? A comfy and luxurious motor that handles and rides like a dream.

Nike Free Run+

Think of the Nike Free Run+ as just that. The end result then, is a more refined, luxurious and everyday version of Nike’s previously successful ‘Free’ range - now with Nike+ capability.

The shoe has great style and is aesthetically pleasing to the eye as well as having some decent tech too.

The asymmetrical lacing of the Nike Free Run+ wraps around the contours of your feet reducing pressure over the top ridge of the foot and the lightweight seamless mesh upper provides the runner with ample ventilation.

While the top of the shoe looks great in the many colour variations available for both the male and female versions and has some great features, it is underneath where technology oozes from the shoe such as:

  • CENTRE-OF-PRESSURE HEEL- to improve cushioning at contact without compromising flexibility
  • FOREFOOT FLEX GROOVES - trigger muscle activation for stronger feet and barefoot-like training
  • DURABLE RUBBER PADS - enhance traction at key wear zones
  • DEEP SIPES - run the length and width of the midsole for increased natural motion
  • NIKE+ TECHNOLOGY – come on, you now what this is by now and if you don’t be sure to check out our review here.

We tried them indoors on the treadmill and cross-trainer and found them to be an adequate lightweight and breathable shoe ideal for the gym, but it was outside where the Free Run+ surprised and excelled itself.

The cushioned teeth of the sole are substantially wider than the shoe canvass without being too noticeable and this provides added comfort, support and shock absorption whilst also keeping you pretty close to the road surface.

Weather it will appeal to previous fans of the Nike Free range will remain to be seen as their interest stemmed from the minimalistic approach but this latest version isn’t too far removed from that and the added Nike+ feature should entice some to make the transition, and even if they don’t, we don’t care, we like it!
