Laura tries... Balls!
I love Balls. Stability balls, Medicine balls, Bosu balls... I don't think the UK as a nation knows how good using balls in fitness is!
I mean, take the Stability ball for example, commonly known as a Swiss ball, pregnancy ball, and a fitness ball. It has a multitude of uses. It's fantastic for working your core muscles, as you have to balance to stay seated on the ball - it's a great alternative to a hard, office chair.
It also helps to keep your posture in alignment, and of course most importantly, it's fun to sit on. (Reminds me of using a space hopper as a child!)
You can combine sitting on the stability ball with hand weights, you can do sit ups, press-ups, planks, squats, you name it, the stability ball does it all - even better, you can use it anywhere, and take it everywhere. They start from as little as £10, making it a great for exercise aid for everyone.
If you have bought a stability ball, and are stuck for exercises, make sure you stay tuned for Winston's Stability Ball Workout, coming soon on Fitness TV on SKY and in our Fitness on Demand section.
Medicine ball training is one of the oldest forms of conditioning and strength training. They are basically weighted balls (look like basketballs), usually between 2-25lb in weight.
Used mainly in gyms, the army, rehabilitation centers and secondary schools they are a fantastic fitness aid and are perfect for use with sit ups, squats, twists, throwing, and catching as they help increase tension on a particular muscle group, in order to tone and define.
Athletes use Medicine balls during rehabilitation after they have sustained injuries, as well as part of their everyday training routine.
Medicine Balls can be used anywhere, and are transportable, as well as good value. Prices start at £10.
Bosu balls!
I personally love BOSU balls - I never knew what they were until I discovered one in my gym recently.
The BOSU ball is one of the most exciting exercise tools to hit the fitness world in a while. Why? Because you can use it for so many different activities, whilst working on endurance, strength, balance, and stability. Its basically a Stability cut in half, but a hard, plastic flat cover has been placed over the top.
The squishy dome side and flat platform on the other allows you to use the ball in many unique ways. For example, squats, one-legged squats, sit ups, press ups, certain yoga positions and planks.
It's very different from anything I have used before, as it has so many uses. I have wanted to have one at home for some time now, because I can really vary my daily core workouts, and it's great fun!
Prices start at around £90, which sounds pricey, however once you discover how versatile this product is, it works out as a reasonably-priced piece of home equipment.
All in all, fitness balls in all different shapes, sizes and weights are fun to use, and encourage variety in your workout. It's easy to stick to the same routine, so why don't you put some balls into your fitness regime!
Stability Balls, Medicine Balls and Bosu Balls are available from the Fitness TV Store now!
